4-H Camps

(This was an email sent to all county offices, Feb. 9, 2004)

Dear Agents,

Although hard to believe, summer camp is just around the corner. Several changes were discussed at the last 4-H Camp Committee and I wanted to let you know how these changes will impact Summer Camp 2004.

The Youth Learning Institute (YLI) will be processing all of the registrations for summer camp. Anyone interested in registering for camp should be instructed to call 864-878-1041 or refer them to our web site at http://www.clemson.edu/yli/4hcamps/ If your county is interested in bringing campers as a group, we will be glad to process registrations as a group as we have done in the past.

Camp registration officially began January 5, 2004. This year we will continue to offer the early bird discount of $25. The discount will apply to anyone who calls to register with a credit card by March 1st or anyone who registers by mail with a deposit postmarked prior to March 1st.

The most significant change for 2004 is that 4-H Camp will be moving from Camp Long in Aiken to the Clinton House Plantation in Clinton. This is due to the fact that 4- H camp attendance has dropped significantly in the past few years. By moving this program to a site equipped to handle smaller groups more efficiently we will be able to offer more weeks of camp. This change will help make the program more consistent and will help tremendously in the area of staffing. 4-H camp will be limited to 60 campers per week on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Clinton House is located near Clinton, SC, two miles east of I-26 at Exit # 52. We are also adding a day to each week of camp, which will now begin on Sunday. This change was made so that most parents won’t have to take off two days of work for camper registration and departure. The weeks of camp are June 6-11, June 13-18, June 20-25, June 27-July 2, July 4-9, July 11-16, and July 18-23 for a total of 7 weeks. We will also offer two 2-week sessions (June 20-July 2 & July 11-23). The cost of camp will be $295 for a 1- week session and $550 for a 2 week session. The camp program will include traditional camp activities such as arts and crafts, swimming (in a swimming pool), and group games. Campers will also be allowed to select one additional activity per day.

In addition to 4-H Camp, we will also be offering Camp Wildlife at this location. Camp Wildlife will be operating separately from the 4-H program. Our sixth year of Camp Sewee, a marine science camp, will be held at the Sewee Coastal Retreat Center in Awendaw, SC.

In addition we are excited about the debut of a new camp called Camp Voyager. Located at Camp Bob Cooper in Summerton, SC, Camp Voyager will be a high tech adventure with creative programming using the latest technical gadgets and the computer equipment. This camp will also operate Sunday through Friday and the cost will be $495 per week. We will be offering several discounts for this first year of camp as described in the materials.

Sincerely,

Stephen Lance
Director of Marketing
